East Bay Regional Park District, headquartered in Oakland, California, is searching for an accomplished legal professional to serve as its General Counsel. Reporting directly to the Board with frequent interaction and direction received from the General Manager, the General Counsel plans, organizes, coordinates, and controls the operations, activities, and functions of the Legal Department with 8 staff (3 Attorneys and a Legal Assistant, Executive Assistant, Risk Manager, Health and Safety Coordinator, and an Administrative Analyst). The General Counsel develops and administers a comprehensive legal services program for the District and acts as the chief legal advisor to the organization. The General Counsel handles sensitive information in a confidential manner and is required to attend all Board meetings. Support to the Board will also involve advising on legal matters that relate to other governmental and regulatory agencies that frequently interface with the District. Importantly, the General Counsel will need to be available to respond and advise on potential legal urgencies should the need occur.

This position requires a Juris Doctorate degree, active membership in the State Bar of California, and six years of experience in public sector law including three years of experience at the senior management level. Experience practicing law in a public agency is preferred.

The compensation for this position will be up to $250,910 (Step F) and will be based on overall career experience and work history. Future merit increases (Steps G and H) are based on annual performance reviews taking the maximum range to $276,619. The District also offers an attractive benefits package including CalPERS retirement (2.5% @ 55 formula (Classic Member) or 2% @ 62 formula (New Member).
