A national search is underway to attract highly qualified candidates to lead the Sacramento Fire Department (SFD). This at-will appointment serves at the pleasure of the City Manager and is a result of a recent retirement. With a FY2017-2018 budget of $112,786,296 million, the SFD has approximately 300 firefighters, 109 company officers, and 52 civilian employees working in 4 divisions. In addition to providing oversight and leadership for the day-to-day operational activities of a progressive and complex organization, the Fire Chief will serve as the top technical advisor to all member agencies on fire, disaster management, and EMS issues. The Chief is also responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive employee/labor relations climate, and for the efficiently utilizing both human and financial resources. This top executive will have “command presence” complemented by confidence, strength of character, and exceptional communication skills.
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of supervisory experience in municipal fire service-related work including either 2 years in a position with administrative/management responsibility at a level higher than or equal to Fire Deputy Chief; or 4 years in a position with administrative/management responsibility at a level higher than or equal to Fire Assistant Chief. A Master’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience. The City is offering an attractive annual salary depending upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
