The City of Fresno is seeking an accomplished professional to serve as the next Fire Chief. The Fire Chief is a key member of the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team and provides oversight and leadership for the day-to-day operational activities of the Fire Department. The Fresno Fire Department is a paid career fire department that serves the City of Fresno and contract areas, providing all-risk emergency response services. The Department has over 300 firefighting members, responding to over 45,000 calls for service annually, utilizing 95 firefighting members each day located in the City of Fresno and Fig Garden Fire Protection District (FGFPD). The City has 3 medical squads to enhance its emergency response. There are 20 fire stations strategically located throughout the City and the FGFPD, as well as an airport station providing services at Fresno Yosemite International Airport totaling 21 stations. The Fire Chief will serve as a technical advisor to other City departments on fire, disaster management, and EMS issues. The Chief is also responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive employee/labor relations climate and the proper and efficient use of both human and financial resources.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of increasingly responsible firefighter management experience, such as a Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief or above, preferably in a large metropolitan Fire department of similar complexity to the City of Fresno. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver’s license is required for the entire term of employment. National Fire Academy Executive Officer (EFO) or California State Fire Marshal Chief Officer or Chief Fire Officer (CFO) through the Commission on Professional Credentialing to be completed within five years of appointment.
The annual salary for the Fire Chief is open and dependent upon qualifications. The City also offers a highly competitive benefit package including Fresno City Retirement System.
