The City of Palm Desert is looking for a forward thinking, team leading, professional to join the City’s leadership cadre as Director of Public Works. Palm Desert is a thriving, year-round community with the natural beauty, cultural, and recreational amenities of a resort destination. With both police and fire services provided by contract, the Public Works Department is the largest operating department in the City of Palm Desert, with a team of approximately 35 staff operating across the following functional areas: development and implementation of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP); transportation planning; traffic operations; street maintenance; facilities management; landscaping and park maintenance; fleet; stormwater and drainage; water and air quality management; and waste and recycling. The Public Works Department supplements its staff with professional service contracts to manage the design and construction management of major capital improvement projects and to provide support across the department.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, business or public administration, or a related field. Seven years of increasingly responsible management and/or administrative experience in engineering, public works operations and maintenance, business or public administration, or a related field. A current California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is a plus, but not required. The salary range for the Public Works Director is +/- $195,000, with placement in the range dependent on qualifications.
