The City of Modesto is recruiting nationally for a highly motivated, innovative, and result-driven Deputy City Manager (DCM), to join the City of Modesto leadership team. In 2022, Modesto voters passed Measure H, a 1% sales tax measure, adding approximately $39 million to the City’s general fund. The new DCM will play an integral role in developing a new strategic plan and supporting the “Building a Healthy Economy and Great Quality of Life” initiative in Modesto. The Deputy City Manager position is appointed by and reports to the City Manager and is an integral part of the executive management team and may act as City Manager in his absence. The DCM helps oversee and guide department implementation of goals, objectives, priorities, policies, and other Council and City Manager directives. While supporting the City Manager, the DCM works collaboratively with other executive leaders and with the Department Heads to guide the development and implementation of the annual work plans and budgets.
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible municipal administration, including significant administrative and personnel management responsibilities, and 2 years of management responsibility. A Master’s degree is desirable. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. The City Manager will select the most highly qualified candidates for consideration based on a combination of education, career experience, and accomplishments that best fit the needs of the City of Modesto.
The City offers a competitive executive salary range of $171,038 – $213,782, which is negotiable and commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits, including CalPERS retirement, included.
