The City of Modesto ($122 million budget and 1,171 FTEs) is recruiting nationally for two Deputy City Managers: Deputy City Manager for Operations and Deputy City Manager for Support. The new DCMs will play an integral role in the development of the new strategic plan and support the “Building a Healthy Economy and Great Quality of Life” initiative in Modesto. The DCMs’ responsibilities could potentially be interchangeable; however, each will oversee one of the City’s two service areas as delineated in the organization chart.
Deputy City Manager Operations
The Deputy City Manager overseeing Operations will possess strong technical skills and knowledge in the following areas: public works, managing capital projects; project management; planning principles; utilities; public participation processes; project and operational budgeting; parks, recreation & neighborhoods; and community & economic development.
Deputy City Manager Support
The Deputy City Manager overseeing Support will possess strong technical skills and knowledge in the following areas: budget; project management; finance and operational budgeting; policy development; securing grants; and contracting and bidding processes; human resources; information technology and innovation; and performance management.
A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is highly desirable. This position requires a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible municipal administration; including 2 years of management responsibility. The City is offering a competitive executive salary, car allowance of $400 per month, and excellent benefits including CalPERS retirement.
