The City of Modesto, California is conducting a national search for an experienced, service-oriented, innovative, and politically astute professional to serve as their next City Auditor. Ideal candidates must have a strong focus on performance measurements and best practices combined with strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to provide a business approach to coordinating all internal auditing operations for the City Council.
The City Auditor is appointed by and reports to the City Council. The City Charter establishes the position of the City Auditor as independent of the City Manager and responsible only to the City Council. The Charter grants the City Auditor complete access to the books and records of all City departments. The City Auditor uses this access, independence, and authority in performing their charter mandate to carry on a continuous investigation of the work of all City departments. The Office conducts its work in accordance with Government Auditing Standards with a budget of $494,872 and a staff of three.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting, finance, public administration, business administration, or a related field.
Experience: Five years of increasingly responsible auditing experience involving planning, organizing, and independently performing audit tasks for financial audits, or internal control reviews, including two years of administrative and management responsibility.
This position requires significant experience in developing, leading, and conducting performance audits. Experience can be drawn from government or private sector, preferably in the conduct of performance audits and compliance for public agencies.
License or Certificate: Possession of a Certified Public Accountant license, a Certified Internal Auditor license, or equivalent certification.
The City of Modesto is offering a competitive compensation package. Offered salary will be dependent on the selected candidate’s qualifications and education (DOQE).
