East Bay Regional Park District, headquartered in Oakland, California, is searching for an accomplished legal professional to serve as its Assistant General Counsel I-II. The Assistant General Counsel, working under the direction of the General Counsel, provides a wide range of legal services to the organization. Currently, there are three Assistant positions supporting the General Counsel, one of which is vacant due to a recent retirement. This position may be filled by a more experienced legal professional (Level II) or by an individual with less years of experience (Level I), allowing for upward mobility and growth. The Assistant General Counsel performs legal research and prepares written and oral advice on various legal issues primarily addressing tort cases, code enforcement, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), public safety (police and fire), recreation, and a wide array of topics spanning open space use and public access. Recent litigation experience and strong working knowledge of the court system will serve the new Assistant General Counsel well in managing outside legal counsel. Direct municipal or public agency experience is required or relative experience through a law firm focusing on municipal and public agency issues is required.

This position requires a Juris Doctorate degree, active membership in the State Bar of California, and at least 4 years of increasingly responsible professional level experience practicing law including experience in a public agency legal department or in a private firm that represents public agencies.

The annual salary range for the General Counsel II position is $177,445 to $226,491 with possible future merit steps up to $249,683. The District may also elect to hire at the level of Assistant General Counsel I based on the career experience of the candidate ($162,510 to $207,542). The Park District also offers an attractive benefits package including CalPERS retirement.
