At a special meeting today, Mayor Lisa Larsen and the City Commission announced the hiring of Craig Owens as the new City Manager of Lawrence.

“The City Commission is pleased that Craig has agreed to serve as City Manager of Lawrence,” said Mayor Larsen. “With such well qualified candidates, it was a difficult decision. Craig’s expertise and breadth of experience will benefit Lawrence as we work together with staff and the community to implement the goals and objectives of the strategic plan.”

Since 2008, Owens served as the City Manager of the City of Clayton, Missouri. Over the past 25 years he has served similar positions for the cities of Rowlett, Texas, O’Fallon, Illinois, and Hazelwood, Missouri.

“I am honored and excited to join the City of Lawrence as City Manager,” said Owens.  “I am eager to bring my experience and passion to the Lawrence community. I look forward to working with the City Commission, exceptional staff, community members, and community partners to continue advancing Lawrence along with its unique and innovative character.”

Craig grew up in Overland Park and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Kansas. He is an International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Credentialed Manager.

Craig is former president of the St. Louis Area City/County Management Association and is currently serving as President of the Missouri City/County Management Association. Craig recently completed his service as a board member for Beyond Housing, where he also served as chair for three years.

Craig and his wife Elizabeth have three children and will move to Lawrence this summer.

He will start July 1.
