San Francisco, CA – Monday, March 20, 2017 – Port of San Francisco Executive Director Elaine Forbes today announced the appointment of Michael J. Martin as the new Deputy Director of Real Estate and Development for the Port effective May 8, 2017.

Mr. Martin will be responsible for the strategic oversight of the Port’s diverse portfolio of real estate assets and development along the 7½ miles of San Francisco’s waterfront that extends from Fisherman’s Wharf to Bayview/Hunters Point. He will manage all aspects of the Port’s property, multi-tenanted portfolio of commercial, industrial, and retail properties and provide high-level direction on strategic real estate and development initiatives, goals and objectives.

“Michael will be a strong asset to our hard working management team,” said Executive Director Forbes. “His extensive knowledge and expertise in a wide range of complex citywide projects and initiatives aimed at making the waterfront a vibrant and sustainable place will be invaluable as we implement large and small scale development projects, while navigating rising sea levels and seismic infrastructure improvements along the waterfront. Michael has the strategic judgement required to lead the revitalization of the Port’s unique waterfront assets and inspire a hardworking and creative team.”

Mr. Martin has worked for the City and County of San Francisco for 15 years. Prior to this appointment, he worked for the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) since 2011. During his tenure with OEWD, he has overseen complex development projects including the Mission Rock and Pier 48, the Southern Bayfront Strategy and the 34th America’s Cup Regatta on San Francisco Bay. His efforts in these projects helped to generate revenue for the Port and the City; and increased jobs and housing for San Francisco residents. Under Mr. Martin’s leadership, interagency working groups collaborated with various San Francisco communities to ensure successful projects for their neighborhoods and the City.

“We’re excited that one of our own is moving over to run real estate and development at the Port,” said Ken Rich Director of Development for the Office of Economic and Workforce Development. “We look forward to working with Mike in his new capacity and continuing our longstanding partnership with the Port in furtherance of a great future for San Francisco’s spectacular waterfront.”

Before his employment at the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, he held management positions at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and the City Attorney’s Office. Prior to his tenure with the City, Mr. Martin worked in the private sector for law firms focusing on real estate asset management negotiations and municipal financing transactions from 1998 to 2002.

Mr. Martin holds a Juris Doctor degree (with honors) from The George Washington University Law School in Washington D.C., and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Mr. Martin lives in Walnut Creek with his daughter and enjoys cycling, reading, following Fighting Irish football and learning more about the history of his adopted home here in the Bay Area.

The Port of San Francisco manages the waterfront as the gateway to a world-class city, and advances environmentally and financially sustainable maritime, recreational and economic opportunities to serve the City, Bay Area, and California.
