The City of Santa Monica, California is currently conducting a search for a highly qualified Chief of Police to lead one of California’s most sophisticated law enforcement agencies. This is an incredible opportunity for a visionary leader to manage the Santa Monica Police Department, an agency that is a leading model of practicing a “guardian mindset,” embracing the tenets of President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Office of the Chief of Police is responsible for the planning, administration, and operation of the Police Department, which has a total staff of 443, including 224 sworn, and an annual operating budget of $87 million (FY17-18). The ideal candidate should embrace community engagement to build trust, support, and collaboration as well as maintain the Department’s reputation for fairness, accountability, and professionalism. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree as well as experience within a law enforcement agency in a diverse and dynamic urban setting and a demonstrated track record of sustained performance in law enforcement executive management. The salary range for this position $238,896 to $294,936 and is supplemented by excellent benefits including CalPERS.
