Broward County, Florida (pop. 1.8 million) is seeking an experienced, dynamic Chief Medical Examiner with exceptional administrative skills to lead the County’s Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services. This hands-on executive reports to the County Administrator and will be directly responsible for an operating budget of $5,212,790 and a staff of 38 full-time professionals. The successful candidate will join five full-time forensic pathologists in an office with a long history of stability within the community and the state. The Chief Medical Examiner serves as chief administrator, heading the department’s four (4) major divisions: Operations, Pathology, Toxicology, and Trauma Management. In FY 2011 there were approximately 1,400 post-mortem examinations with an individual caseload per pathologist of approximately 250 cases per year.
The Broward County Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services is a 24/7 operation with an in-house state-of-the-art toxicology laboratory, Chief Toxicologist, and staff. Office amenities include an on-site reference library, with a new multi-head (10) microscope, training room, new dissecting scope, new fingerprint scanner, one-year old automated lab lynx data management system, digital body and dental x-ray, renovated office space, and up-to-date computers with high speed internet connections.
Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited medical school and have completed pathology and forensic pathology fellowship programs in accredited institutions. Board certification in Anatomical Pathology and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology, or equivalent, is preferred, however, candidates that are eligible for both will be considered. An applicant must possess or be eligible for State of Florida medical licensure, and must it must be obtained within first 6 months of employment. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six years (6) of experience in the practice of pathology and certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomical and/or Clinical Pathology and/or qualified by training and/or years of experience to sit for and pass the requisite Forensic Pathology certification requirements of the Board. Experience with a large and complex Medical Examiner’s Office is preferred. The salary for the position is highly competitive, with excellent benefits.
